Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

Just as your child seems to be growing like a weed, dental problems can develop fast—often without anyone noticing it until it’s too late. Getting your child’s teeth checked by Dr. Patrick regularly for cavities and other oral infections ensures that these issues are caught as early as possible. Otherwise, your child could suffer unnecessary tooth pain, feel self-conscious about their smile, or be unable to bite and chew as they should. That’s why they should come in for a dental checkup every six months.

Professional cleanings are also essential at a young age because our team can teach your child proper brushing and flossing techniques to do at home. We can also remove plaque that has hardened on their teeth, reducing the risk of future cavities!

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

We strongly recommend bringing your child in for their first dental checkup about six months after their teeth start to erupt—typically around their first birthday. We will spend time getting to know your child, helping them feel comfortable and safe, and then Dr. Patrick will perform a gentle exam. He’ll look to make sure their teeth are erupting in a healthy way and do not have decay. Older children who can understand and follow instructions will have X-rays taken to help us identify any cavities that may be hidden from the naked eye and to check that permanent teeth are developing correctly under the gums.

What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning

If your little one is wiggly, the cleaning portion of the appointment will be brief. We will stick to showing them and you how to brush for successful cleanings at home. When your child can sit still a little longer, one of our hygienists will professionally clean their teeth, meaning we’ll take off tartar. As a result, your child’s teeth can be better protected against cavities until their next appointment in six months!
