As a parent, you have to make countless decisions every day that relate to your child’s well-being. Some of those decisions are straightforward, but others might make you hesitate. For example, even though fluoride is widely used in dental care, you may have heard some rumors that it is unsafe. What is the truth? This blog post explains why you can be confident that fluoride is safe for children.

Why Some Parents Are Concerned

With just a bit of searching the internet, you will quickly find certain communities who are strongly against the use of fluoride. Their concern stems from the fact that overexposure to fluoride can have some side effects. One of the most common issues that can arise is permanent discoloration of the teeth. This condition, called dental fluorosis, causes white specks or lines on the enamel. Its effects are primarily cosmetic and not a major oral health problem.

In cases of very extreme overexposure, fluoride can lead to skeletal problems or even have an impact on cognitive development. Keep in mind that such outcomes are quite rare and do not result from normal fluoride use, even when kids are exposed to it daily through municipal tap water.

Fluoride Is Safe and Beneficial

Everything has its pros and cons, and when it comes to fluoride, the benefits greatly overshadow any risks! Here are just a few reasons why you can confidently include this mineral in your child’s oral care routine:

  • Research: Several studies have been conducted on fluoride, and they consistently find that it is safe in toothpaste, dental treatments, and tap water. One study, published in 2022, concluded that it had no adverse impact on children’s emotional behavioral development, even when exposure occurred very early in life.
  • Support from professional bodies: The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Dental Association, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention all agree that fluoride is a safe way to lower the risk of tooth decay.
  • Natural: Fluoride is a natural substance, and when children do not get enough of it during critical developmental periods, it may lead to a lifelong struggle with cavities and weak teeth.

Fluoride is a friend, not a foe! Talk to your child’s dentist if you would like information about how to use it safely for your family.
